Ultrasound of the urinary system is used to assess the kidneys, the ureters (to the visible extent) and the bladder. In the case of male patients, the examination is also used for the assessment of the prostate gland.
Indications for the examination are:
- bladder diseases;
- kidney diseases;
- prostate diseases;
- lithiasis (kidney or bladder stones);
- pain in the lumbar region;
- difficulty urinating;
- haematuria;
- proteinuria or anuria.;
Ultrasound examination is an imaging method involving ultrasonic waves. This technique is based on the phenomenon of reflection of an ultrasound beam against the structures of the organs.
At Medicover Hospital, the examination is only available for adults, i.e. persons over 18 years of age.
At Medicover Hospital, the examination is only available for adults, i.e. persons over 18 years of age.
- Duration of the examination: approx. 15-20 minutes.
- The patient is provided with the results of the examination in the form of an impression with the ultrasound image. All documents are printed during the appointment, so the patient receives the original version of the results. The impression is also available online.
- A non-invasive examination. For the ultrasound of the urinary system to be performed correctly, the bladder has to be full – when filled with urine, the bladder pushes the intestinal loops out of the small pelvis and provides a kind of “ultrasound window” that enables observation of the organs: the bladder, the kidneys and, in the case of male patients, the prostate gland.
Badanie wymaga specjalnego przygotowania:
- on the day before the examination: follow a light diet, without vegetables, fruit and dark bread;
- in the case of patients who are severely overweight: Espumisan 3 x 2 capsules should be taken one day before the examination – the medicine will clear the digestive tract of air which might otherwise be an obstacle to ultrasound;
- 6 hours before the examination: refrain from consuming food;
- refrain from smoking tobacco;
- refrain from chewing gum;
- 2 hours before the examination: drink 1-1.5 litres of still water and refrain from urinating.
