Lutropin (LH, luteinising hormone) is a hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Its most important functions include regulating the menstrual cycle, and in males – stimulating interstitial cells to secrete testosterone. LH levels change with age. During ovulation, they increase slightly.
The lutropin test is performed along with laboratory analyses of other hormones, including testosterone and progesterone.
LH hormone testing is ordered in the following cases:
-
diagnosis and treatment of female and male infertility,
-
pituitary gland disorders,
-
diseases of the gonads (ovaries or testicles),
-
menstrual and pubertal disorders,
-
ovulation disorders,
-
polycystic ovary syndrome.
High levels of lutropin (LH) can indicate conditions such as pituitary adenoma, ovarian failure and testicular failure. Low levels may indicate damage to the pituitary gland.
Taking certain medications can contribute to an increase in LH levels in the blood.

LH test: preparation
The lutropin (LH) levels are tested in blood drawn from the cubital vein. This is done following the sample collection procedure - skin disinfection, application of a tourniquet, and pressure on the injection site.
No special preparation for the examination is required. The patient does not need to be fasting. Due to the circadian rhythm of LH secretion, the test is best performed in the morning.
For pre-menopausal women, LH testing is performed several times at different phases of the menstrual cycle.
There are no contraindications to performing the test.
