The child’s first dental appointment
It does make sense to develop proper oral health habits from an early age. It is very important for the child to become accustomed to the dentist’s office and the dentist himself as early as possible. In pedodontics (i.e. paediatric dentistry), as in no other field of dentistry, the appropriate dentist’s approach to the patient is key. Good cooperation can be initiated by the so-called adaptation appointment, i.e. the dentist’s first meeting with the child.
Why should you schedule an adaptation visit?
The first step toward stress-free dental appointments
An adaptation visit helps your child get used to the dental office, chair, and doctor. This allows them to explore a new environment in a calm and safe atmosphere.
Building trust and positive associations
The dentist combines conversation with play, shows the tools, and explains their work - all to help the Little Patient feel confident and at ease.
Learning to care for teeth from an early age
During the visit, the child learns how to properly care for oral hygiene and why regular check-ups are important for their health.
An individual approach tailored to your child
Every adaptation visit looks different. The dentist adjusts the pace and approach to the child’s needs and emotions - ensuring comfort and a sense of safety.

Who is an adaptation visit for?
The child’s adaptation appointment to the dentist is a very individual matter. There are children who feel confident and at ease in the dentist’s office from the very first moment and are curious about what is going to happen. There are also such little patients for whom dental tools will cause anxiety and stress. It is the parents who, in cooperation with the dentist, will be able to best assess what form of consultation will be best for their child. What does the adaptation appointment look like?
- The main purpose of the adaptation appointment is to build the child’s trust towards the dentist and to accustom the child to the specific conditions in the dentist’s office – a special chair, specific smells, dentist’s coat. A dentist tries to make the little patient interested in dental equipment and tools, and also explains to the child what the dentist’s work is about.
- The entire visit consists in combining a conversation with fun – the most important thing is that the child feels safe and at ease in the dentist’s office. The dentist also provides the child with tips on how to properly care for the teeth and explains why regular dental check-ups are so important.
- There is no single pattern for the course of the adaptation appointment. n each case, the doctor adjusts the mode of operation and approach to how the child behaves and feels. Sometimes, a dental check-up is performed at the end of the appointment if the child is ready for this. However, it happens that the little patient needs to visit the dentist and his office several times in order to trust the doctor and feel comfortable.
In the scope of the adaptive visit to the dentist, the doctor:
- will show the little patient the office and the equipment,
- will provide support in the selection of oral care products tailored to the needs of young patients,
- depending on the child’s readiness, will check the health condition of the little patient’s oral cavity,
- will plan further dental care in consultation with the child’s parent.
When should you come with your child for the adaptation appointment?
- this is the child’s first contact with the dentist and the dentist’s office,
- you want to reduce the child’s stress related to dental treatment, as well as show him or her the new environment and people,
- you want him or her to develop the habit of taking proper care of oral hygiene.
During the adaptation appointment, the dentist will make your child have a great time at the dentist’s office. Thanks to this, next check-ups will take place in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere – without unnecessary stress. Let’s convince the little patient that treatment of teeth can be associated with something positive!
