Testing for children
Children of any age can also take the test. The test is similar to the one for adults. In the case of young children, a parent’s help is usually required when taking a swab.
How to interpret the result?
The test is used for the qualitative detection of the nucleocapsid protein (NP) antigen of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and influenza A or B virus – it does not provide information on the amount of antigen of a given virus but purely whether antigens of the given virus are present in the sample of material taken.
The interpretation below applies to the results of a person with symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
A positive result
Indicates an active infection with:
or
or
- COVID-19
- influenza A/B,
- coinfection with Covid-19 and influenza A/B.
However, it does not rule out bacterial infection or co-infection with other pathogens which this test does not detect.
Negative result:
Does not rule out infection with the SARS-CoV-2 or influenza A/B viruses – the doctor should decide on the further course of treatment. If symptoms strongly suggesting Covid-19 coexist, the doctor may refer the patient for a PCR test.
