The fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid under ultrasound guidance (FNAB) is a procedure that involves collecting a cytological sample from one lesion. The collected material is then subjected to histopathological examination, i.e., the evaluation of the collected tissues, and this service is charged additionally (according to the current price list applicable at Damian Medical Center or Medicover Medical Center).
FNAB is a targeted examination, meaning that the doctor performs it under ultrasound (USG) guidance, which allows precise determination of the area from which the biological material should be collected. The procedure does not require local anesthesia, as very thin needles are used (they have a smaller diameter than those used for blood draws).
The examination can help diagnose or rule out malignant thyroid lesions, identify certain types of thyroid inflammation, and determine further management if a disease is confirmed (pharmacological treatment or the need for surgery).
The examination does not require any special preparation.
To perform the biopsy, the following are required:
- A referral from a doctor (in paper form)
- A thyroid ultrasound (USG) result with images — not older than 6 months (both the report and images must be in paper form)
If the procedure is to be performed by MD, PhD Daniel Morończyk, it is also necessary to have a current TSH test result (not older than 3 months) and a prior consultation with the doctor.
If, during the examination, the doctor identifies more than one lesion that requires testing, and the patient decides to have a biopsy of an additional lesion, the patient will be required to pay at the clinic for additional biopsies and histopathological examinations.
