A thoracic surgeon is a specialist in the field of chest surgery who deals with the surgical treatment of various diseases, injuries, as well as congenital and acquired defects within the human chest (excluding the heart – this organ is handled by cardiology specialists).
The most common condition thoracic surgeons encounter is lung cancer, which is the most common malignant tumor in men and the second most common in women in Poland. Thoracic surgeons often work closely with oncologists, but also with pulmonologists and vascular surgeons.
A thoracic surgeon diagnoses and treats, among others:
- lung and pleural diseases (tumors, pleural empyema, certain forms of pulmonary tuberculosis, lung abscesses, bronchiectasis),
- esophageal diseases (strictures, tumors, diverticula),
- mediastinal diseases (benign and malignant tumors),
- diaphragmatic diseases (diaphragmatic hernias),
- congenital defects and injuries of the chest wall and organs.
The thoracic surgeon is also responsible for diagnosing and treating all injuries within the chest area, such as: trauma from traffic accidents or burns, lung wounds, pulmonary contusions, pneumothorax, tracheal rupture, hemorrhages, rib fractures, and transplant surgery, such as lung transplants.
Today, thoracic surgery is developing rapidly, made possible by new or improved surgical techniques, such as extracorporeal circulation and endoscopic techniques, which allow for safer and less invasive procedures. These advancements contribute significantly to a quicker return to health, mobility, and normal functioning for the patient.
