Toxoplasmosis is caused by a protozoan called *Toxoplasma gondii*. The infection results in a localized inflammatory response and the formation of cysts, which are not dangerous but can persist for life. Very rarely, toxoplasmosis causes symptoms such as: inflammation of the retina or choroid, enlarged lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms. These symptoms occur individually in less than 15% of infected individuals.
Toxoplasmosis is particularly dangerous for women planning to become pregnant and for people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV. The infection can be contracted from domestic animals, especially cats. Most cat owners will contract toxoplasmosis at some point, but the symptoms are usually so mild that the disease can pass unnoticed, without diagnosis or significant impact on the person's life.
How can you get infected with toxoplasmosis?
The parasite is commonly found in cats and other animals such as sheep, poultry, and pigs.
Infection can occur through close contact with animals or their feces. Another route of infection is consuming unwashed fruits or vegetables, or raw or undercooked meat. Infection can also be transmitted to a person through an organ transplant, or from mother to fetus. A child infected this way may suffer from congenital toxoplasmosis, a much more dangerous form of the disease.
