Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a disease to which both adults and children are exposed. TBE is caused by the Flaviviridae virus – it is most commonly transmitted by the bites of infected ticks. Infection can also occur through the consumption of milk and meat from animals infected with tick-borne encephalitis. Vaccination against TBE does not protect against Lyme disease.
It is commonly believed that people who work outdoors and spend a lot of their leisure time being active – in the woods, in the mountains or in the meadows – are mainly exposed to ticks bites. However, ticks are also found in urban areas. They can live in parks or flower beds, or they can be brought home by pets – mainly by dogs and cats.
Tick-borne encephalitis symptoms
Symptoms of tick-borne encephalitis may not be specific. In stage one (the so-called prodromal stage), patients experience the following symptoms:
- body temperature up to 38°C,
- headache, muscle and joint pains,
- upper respiratory tract inflammation,
- diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
In some cases patients recover without treatment, but sometimes stage two (i.e. neurological stage) of the disease develops. Symptoms of stage two of TBE include the following:
- fever up to 40°C,
- headache, muscle and joint pains,
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- neck stiffness,
- photophobia and/or sensitivity to sound.
If symptoms of encephalitis or meningitis occur, the patient should be hospitalised. Patients with severe and complicated TBE condition have to be transferred to intensive care units. In some patients, the treatment lasts many months. It is estimated that up to 2% of cases of the European type tick-borne encephalitis may be fatal.

Vaccination protects against tick-borne encephalitis. It does not give immunity to Lyme disease or other tick-borne diseases. Furthermore, it does not exempt you from the obligation to apply protection and prevention measures – using repellents, wearing suitable clothing, checking your skin after returning from a walk, etc.
The package includes 3 doses of vaccine, which make up the primary vaccination cycle. In order to ensure continuity of protection against tick-borne encephalitis, it is necessary to take a booster dose – the first one 3 years after completion of the primary cycle and each subsequent dose every 5 years.
NOTE:
the package does not include vaccination qualification visits. Patients who do not have qualification visits included in their care plan have to purchase them separately. The package which includes vaccinations and qualification visits you can purchase HERE.
If a doctor does not qualify the patient for vaccination, the patient must once again make an appointment for a qualification visit on the date specified by the doctor. There will be a fee for any follow-up vaccination qualification visit.
