Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate testing in blood.

Non-irritating androgen. Not subject to diurnal rhythm. In women 90% is derived from the adrenal glands, in men it is derived entirely from the adrenal glands.

Paramete

Parameter used in the diagnosis of premature puberty caused, for example, by a virilizing tumor of the Adrenal glands or adrenal hyperplasia with deficiency of the enzyme 11-hydroxylase.

It is used as a marker of adrenal cortex mass, and allows the differentiate between adrenal and ovarian hyperandrogenemia.

Elevated values are observed in:

• adrenal cortical tumors,
• adrenal cortical hyperplasia,
• adrenal-gonadal syndrome,

Because of the decrease in concentration with age, it has recently been suggested its supplementation recently.
