SARS CoV-2 rapid antigen test
The antigen test is a qualitative test that detects the presence of specific SARS-CoV-2 antigens in a nasopharyngeal swab, unlike PCR tests, which detect viral genetic material in a sample.
This type of test is intended for people who have symptoms that may indicate infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
This is a very quick way to confirm the infection - the waiting time for the results is 15-30 minutes, which is an obvious advantage compared to the PCR test, the result of which is expected in up to 24 hours, because it requires the use of special equipment.

TEST RESULT The waiting time for the result is 15-30 minutes. The client receives the result in Polish and English. |
The antigen test, according to the WHO and CDC guidelines, can be used to diagnose infections in patients during the first 5-7 days after the onset of symptoms.
As infections increase in the population, it can also be used for testing asymptomatic people, e.g. before traveling. The SARS CoV-2 antigen test is performed at Medicover Medical Centres.
Just like the results of the RT-PCR and FRANKD (RT-LAMP) tests, the results of the antigen test are now recognised by the Chief Sanitary Inspector.
The antigen tests performed at Medicover Centres have a sensitivity of 96.52% (Roche), 93.3% (Abbot) and specificity of 99.68% (Roche), 99.4% (Abbot).
Antigen test results
The interpretation below relates to the results of a patient who has symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
- + Positive result – starting from 31 October 2020, the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antigens in the specimen is treated as a confirmation of a COVID-19 case and is reported to the State Sanitary Inspection. The patient has to be isolated.
- - A negative result does not mean that SARS-CoV-2 infection is excluded. A molecular RT-PCR test should be done to confirm the result in persons with symptoms that suggest COVID-19. Isolation is required until a negative genetic test result is obtained.
If the test is done on a person who does not show symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the results obtained should be interpreted individually by a health professional who ordered the test. If the result of the test is invalid, it should be immediately repeated.
The SARS-CoV-2 antigen test is performed at Medicover Centres throughout Poland.
Tests in children
We also offer the test to children (of all ages). The test in children is similar to that in adults. However, taking a sample from a child depends on the child’s cooperation during the procedure. The test can be performed at blood drawing stations at Medicover Medical Centres.
Important! We would like to remind you that all Medicover Centres require everyone to wear a mask covering the mouth and nose and to disinfect hands. In the event of non-compliance with the above safety rules, the personnel may refuse to perform the test.
Preparation for the test
- Do not smoke cigarettes 2 hours before the swab is taken.
- Do not use antimicrobial products (drops, ointments or aerosols) in your nose 2 hours before the test.
- Do not rinse or blow your nose.
