Obesitology consultation

An obesitology consultation is a specialist medical appointment aimed at diagnosing and treating overweight and obesity. An obesitologist is a doctor who specialises in the comprehensive treatment of weight disorders, addressing not only dietary issues but also hormonal, metabolic, psychological aspects, and the patient’s lifestyle. This specialist holds a certificate from the Polish Society for the Treatment of Obesity or an equivalent qualification confirming their expertise.

During the consultation, the doctor:

• conducts a detailed interview with the patient,
• performs a physical examination and anthropometric measurements, including weight and height, and calculates the BMI,
• monitors and interprets the results of the patient's body composition analysis,
• orders or reviews available laboratory test results,
• discusses possible causes and complications of obesity,
• analyses previous attempts at treating obesity and identifies reasons for failure,
• develops an individual treatment plan for obesity, including lifestyle modifications and, if necessary, pharmacotherapy or surgical intervention,
• refers the patient to other specialists if needed (e.g. dietitian, psychologist, cardiologist, endocrinologist).

Duration: 30 minutes

Indications for consultation:

• overweight or obesity,
• lack of weight reduction despite following a diet and engaging in physical activity,
• preparation for or follow-up care after bariatric surgery,
• metabolic diseases that predispose to weight gain and obesity (e.g. type 2 diabetes).

NOTE! A body composition analysis is recommended before the obesitology consultation.

2. The doctor will offer you comprehensive healthcare – an obesitologist focuses not only on weight reduction but also on treating obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnoea.
3. During your consultation, you will receive essential support in treating obesity – if necessary, the doctor may refer you to other specialists (e.g. psychologist, psychotherapist, dietitian) who can help you manage emotions and maintain motivation for further action.
4. With the help of an obesitologist, you are more likely not only to achieve short-term weight loss but also to maintain long-term results by preventing a relapse of obesity.
