Implanon NXT contraceptive implant

Implanon NXT is a modern and effective contraceptive method.

It is based on hormonal contraception. Progestogen is released through a small, flexible rod – 4 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The rod is placed under the skin of a patient’s arm by a doctor using a special disposable applicator. The contraceptive implant can be felt with the fingers and is visible on X-ray images. Using the implant is a long-term contraceptive – it works for 3 years, but can be removed at any moment. With this contraceptive solution, you do not have to remember about taking the pill every day or regularly applying the patches.

Why should you use the product? High effectiveness of the implant – estimated at 99.5%. Quick insertion of the implant – the procedure is virtually painless (the skin is locally anaesthetised) and takes only a few minutes. Convenience – you do not have to remember about regularly taking pills, changing patches or diaphragms or contacting your doctor for prescriptions. Long-term effect – the implant works for 3 years. Possibility to remove the implant at any time – fertility returns within 1-6 weeks after the removal. Safety – once a doctor makes sure that there are no contraindications, the use of Implanon NXT is a safe form of contraception for women.

The contraceptive implant is a method of hormonal contraception recommended especially for women who cannot take combined contraceptive pills and who are breastfeeding.

What do you need to remember?

• The product is intended only for women.

• The product does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases and infections, including HIV.

• Before the implant can be inserted, a woman should attend a qualification visit to a gynaecologist. During the assessment of eligibility for the use of the product, the doctor will conduct a medical interview, perform a gynaecological examination and measure blood pressure of the patient. The doctor may also order or carry out other required tests or examinations (such as cytology, vaginal ultrasound or breast examination).

• When coming to the abovementioned appointment, the patient should bring the result of a cervical cytology performed up to 1 year earlier.

If the patient is qualified for the insertion of Implanon NXT, the procedure takes place during the same visit as qualification.

Contraindications to the provision of the service: pregnancy; hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients listed in the leaflet; presence of venous thromboembolism; presence or suspicion of sex hormone-dependent cancers; presence or history of benign or malignant liver tumours; presence or history of severe liver disease (temporary contraindication – only until liver function tests return to normal); genital tract bleeding of unknown cause.

The NXT Implanon insertion procedure:

First, a patient lies down on the couch on her back with the arm in a proper position. A doctor marks the site of subdermal insertion of the contraceptive implant on the inside of the arm of the non-dominant hand. The doctor disinfects the site of insertion of the contraceptive implant and administers an anaesthetic – either using a spray or by injecting the anaesthetic directly under the skin. The doctor uses a special applicator to place the contraceptive implant in the right place under the skin. Then, the doctor identifies the presence and position of the contraceptive implant by palpation and applies a pressure dressing to prevent bruises at the implant insertion site. Once the procedure is over, the doctor provides the patient with a Patient Alert Card that contains information on the serial number of the contraceptive implant, the date it was inserted, the planned date of its removal/replacement and the arm in which the implant was placed. It is important to bring this Card to every appointment related to the use of the implant. Lastly, the doctor agrees with the patient upon the frequency of follow-up appointments – the first consultation will probably take place 3 months after insertion of the contraceptive implant. If the patient experiences any side effects or if she can no longer feel the implant under the skin, it is necessary to contact the doctor – at any time, also between the scheduled follow-up appointments.

 

PLEASE NOTE: If, for medical reasons, it is currently not possible to insert Implanon NXT (temporary disqualification), the doctor informs the patient about it and indicates a new date for the procedure. In such a situation, the patient may:

• cancel the implant insertion – in this case, the patient will receive a reimbursement less the price of the qualification visit; or
• undergo the procedure during the following qualification visit – in this case, the patient pays the cost of the qualification visit at which it was not possible to insert Implanon NXT and has the option to take advantage of the previously purchased service (qualification visit, the implant and insertion procedure) at a different time.

To schedule a new qualification visit at the time indicated by the doctor and pay for the completed appointment, it is necessary to visit the reception desk at a given Medicover Centre.

If, for medical reasons, it is not possible to insert Implanon NXT (permanent disqualification), the doctor informs the patient about it and proposes another method of contraception. Due to the lack of possibility to carry out the procedure during the appointment, the patient may choose not to have the implant inserted, in which case she will be reimbursed the cost of the implant and the insertion procedure less the price of the qualification visit.
