Are you active, or would you like to do sports for recreational purposes at a gym, in fitness club or on your own? Do you think that only professional athletes should undergo regular medical examinations? Quite the opposite.

Preliminary tests performed before you start do sports regularly, and check-up tests performed while you do sports enable you to examine many important aspects of your health.

Examinations and tests included in the basic package for active people evaluate selected biochemical parameters of blood, and physical and biochemical parameters of urine the abnormal values of which require a medical consultation and, depending on the situation, in-depth diagnostics for e.g. anaemia or thyroid diseases.

For those who want to lead a more active lifestyle or for active people who would like to check important aspects of their health, Medicover has prepared a basic diagnostic programme “For Active People – Basic". The package is dedicated for people aged 16 and older.

Complete blood count

It is a test helping to diagnose of anaemia. Abnormal levels of haemoglobin and other parameters (e.g. MCV) may suggest anaemia, and require other diagnostic tests for a disease and determine its cause.

Fasting glucose

Abnormal glucose levels may indicate pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes (development of insulin resistance), which will affect training effects. Most importantly, however, abnormal results and diagnosis of type 2 diabetes require treatment and inclusion in the training and dietary plan, in order to match the exercise and dietary recommendations, and promote optimal blood glucose level and reduce the risk of complications in diabetes. In the case of an abnormal result, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Lipid profile

Excessively high concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides may be reduced thanks to physical activity, while the so-called “good” HDL cholesterol level may increase. Excessive concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL (the so-called “bad” cholesterol) indicate abnormal lipid profile (dyslipidemia), and help assess cardiovascular risk. Abnormalities in the lipidogram may coexist with diabetes, thyroid disease and liver disease. In the case of lipid profile disorders, it is extremely important to modify your diet and other elements of your lifestyle and/or start pharmacotherapy. So, if your results are abnormal, consult an internal medicine doctor and together decide on appropriate actions.

Alanine aminotransferase – ALT; aspartate aminotransferase – AST

These two key enzymes help assess your liver function. ALT is mainly found in the liver, so an increase in its concentration may indicate liver cell damage.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone – TSH

Deviations from normal TSH values required extensive diagnostic tests to diagnose/exclude hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, because if they are diagnosed, not only does the training programme but also the dietary programme may require adjustment, and you require treatment. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can be confused with overtraining.

Urinalysis

This test provides information on the proper functioning of the kidneys and urinary tract. It is helpful in monitoring diabetes and diabetic kidney disease. For active people, it is invaluable when determining the level of hydration of the body. pH of urine may vary depending on the diet used.

Sodium blood test

Sodium is responsible for the proper transmission of signals in the nervous system, and it also affects the arterial pressure. Its deficiency or excess in the body requires medical consultation, and may be an indication for active people to modify their usual diet.

Potassium blood test

Potassium is responsible for the transmission of impulses to the muscles, and takes part in the muscle contraction. Its deficiency can result in painful cramps, and make it difficult to exercise.

How can I make an appointment for the test as part of the programme? You do not have to make an appointment. All you have to do is come to the collection room in the morning with your ID card. Remember to prepare for the tests. • Detailed working hours of individual collection rooms in each Medicover Centre are available at www.medicover.pl.

Test results You will collect your results at the collection room. If you have a medical care package at Medicover and you have downloaded your platform password for Medicover OnLine, you can check your results online.

HOW TO PREPARE?

Blood tests

• You have 3 months (after the date indicated in the order confirmation) to use the package.
• You can have the tests performed at Medicover Centres of your choice in the largest Polish cities: Warszawa, Wrocław, Kraków, Katowice Poznań, Gdańsk, Gdynia, Szczecin, Lublin, Łódź.
• If you would like to consult your tests with an internal medicine doctor, visit https://www.medistore.com.pl/internista or make an appointment with your doctor if you already have a medical care package at Medicover.
  • On the day before the blood tests, reduce physical effort, follow a light diet should and drink no alcohol.
  • On the day of the tests, come on an empty stomach, i.e. do not eat or drink for up to 12 hours before the blood collection.
  • If you need to take any medications or if you are very thirsty, you may drink a glass of still mineral water.
