Diabetologists – what do they do?
A diabetologist is a doctor who specialises in the treatment of metabolic diseases directly related to carbohydrate metabolism (e.g. diabetes).
They identify the type of diabetes, determine the dosage of oral drugs and, if necessary, insulin, as well as give advice on the diet.
They have the knowledge and competence necessary to:
- diagnose and treat such diseases as: diabetes, metabolic diseases in children and adults, gestational diabetes
- perform examinations of organs and tissues which have been affected due to diabetes
- qualify patients for surgery
- provide assistance in the event of hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia.
During the consultation, the doctor:
- takes history and performs a physical examination,
- gives a diagnosis,
- gives medical instructions,
- prescribes medication,
- issues referrals for examinations/tests, consultations andhospitalisation
- issues sick notes.
