Cytomegalovirus is a fairly common virus that is usually harmless. Sometimes it causes problems in infants and people with weakened immune systems. Infection with this virus is a common cause of birth defects, acquired during the perinatal period and in fetuses.
In people with a properly functioning immune system, CMV infection is asymptomatic or has a mild course. Once infected, the virus remains latent in the body and becomes active in states of immunodeficiency, such as the result of illness.
When first infected with CMV, some people usually develop symptoms resembling infectious mononucleosis, including:
- fever
- muscle pain
- fatigue
- nausea
- sore throat
- enlargement of the liver and lymph nodes.
They usually resolve without treatment in about three weeks.
In people with significantly reduced immunity, the disease has a much more severe course.
Sources of infection can be saliva, urine, sweat, sperm and any other secretions of the infected person or carrier
