The blood test is done to determine total bilirubin levels.
When to get a bilirubin test?
The bilirubin level test is used to diagnose:
-
prehepatic jaundice,
-
extrahepatic jaundice,
-
parenchymal jaundice.
Abnormal bilirubin levels can indicate liver disorders such as Gilbert's disease. Bilirubin is the final breakdown product of haemoglobin. The bilirubin testing has a diagnostic-differential value when performed in conjunction with the tests of direct bilirubin, as well as the activity of AST, ALT and ALP enzymes.
Total bilirubin: how to prepare for the examination?
-
The test involves collecting blood into an EDTA tube, following the collection procedure, disinfecting the skin, applying a tourniquet and applying pressure to the injection site after the procedure. The entire procedure takes a few minutes.
-
The injection itself takes several (less than 20) seconds.
-
If a patient is not properly prepared for the examination, the results will be unreliable. The sample collection should be done in the morning.
After the test is performed at Medicover Medical Centre, you can receive the results online.
-
Download the Medicover OnLine app for your phone from Google Play or the App Store.
